As part of his participation in the 2025 Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C., the Minister of Finance of the Syrian Interim Government, Mr. Mohammad Yasser Barnia, held a meeting with World Bank officials Anna Begrod and Ousmane Dioni to discuss the prospects for the Bank’s future engagement in supporting recovery and development efforts in Syria.
The meeting witnessed the two parties agreeing to develop a timetable for supporting Syria during the current and next year, focusing on specific areas of cooperation, including:
● Supporting the electricity sector with grants allocated for reforms (coming soon)
● Enhancing transparency in public finances
● Providing technical assistance in a number of sectors
Among the sectors discussed for technical support were:
● Reforming state-owned enterprises
● Developing social safety nets
● Modernizing the financial infrastructure
● Banking reform
● Supporting public-private partnerships
● Improving governance Religion
● Revitalizing capital markets
● Developing statistical systems
Minister Barniah emphasized the importance of transforming this constructive dialogue into tangible practical steps that positively impact the lives of citizens inside Syria and contribute to enhancing the efficiency of state institutions in liberated areas.
This meeting is part of the Ministry of Finance’s efforts to expand international partnerships with major economic institutions and build a sustainable platform for cooperation that meets the requirements of the next phase in Syria.
