In a new development reflecting a significant improvement in bilateral Syrian-Qatari relations, Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab received a high-level security delegation from Qatar today in the capital, Damascus. The meeting, which brought together security officials from both countries, discussed ways to enhance joint cooperation in the security and police fields.
The Qatari delegation included the Commander of the Support and Logistics Group of the Internal Security Forces (Lekhwiya), Staff Colonel Saleh Abdul Wahab Al-Muhannadi; the Director of International Cooperation, Falah Abdullah Al-Dosari; and the Commander of the Search and Rescue Group, Khaled Abdullah Al-Humaidi. The two sides discussed exchanging expertise and developing mechanisms for joint work in security fields, thus enhancing coordination between them.
This meeting comes within the framework of the continuous improvement in bilateral relations between the two countries, starting with Qatari humanitarian aid after the fall of the Assad regime, through the supply of natural gas to the Deir Ali power plant to improve electricity, and ending with the presidential visit of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to Doha, which Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani described as “a visit to the country that has stood with the Syrians since day one.”
In a related context, Doha is conducting intensive talks with the United States to discuss lifting sanctions on Syria, according to press reports. This step is considered part of Qatari efforts to promote stability in the region, as Doha emerges as a potential mediator to ease Damascus’s international isolation.
The security meeting in Damascus and the “Qatari-US” discussions on sanctions together present a picture of an active Qatari policy toward Syria, ranging from economic diplomacy to security, in an attempt to fill the regional vacuum and reconnect Damascus with its Arab and international surroundings.
The current situation raises questions about the possibility of further positive developments in Syria in the coming period, especially with Qatari efforts to mediate with international parties.
