Khartoum – Details Press
The Sudanese army spokesman said on Sunday that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces carried out their first drone attack on an airbase and other facilities around Port Sudan Airport.
This is the first time that RSF attacks have reached the eastern coastal city.
The Sudanese army spokesman announced that the attack targeted Osman Digna Air Base, a cargo warehouse, and several civilian facilities around Port Sudan Airport, using several suicide drones. According to official statements, the attack did not result in any casualties.
Military sources reported that anti-aircraft missiles intercepted the drones, and no casualties were recorded. Smoke rose from some of the targeted sites.
This escalation follows a series of recent drone attacks carried out by the Rapid Support Forces on military sites and vital facilities in the states of River Nile, Northern, and West Kordofan. This comes amid the expansion of the conflict and the deterioration of the humanitarian situation, especially with the ongoing violent clashes in El Fasher and the occurrence of massacres against civilians in other parts of the country.
The Sudanese army considered the attack on Port Sudan an indication of a dangerous shift in the nature of the conflict, warning of its repercussions for the security of the region. Meanwhile, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs renewed its call for the international community to take a firm stance against what it described as “crimes and violations” committed by the Rapid Support Forces against civilians.
Meanwhile, our correspondent reported, citing a private source, that all flights were suspended after Port Sudan Airport was targeted by drones in the morning.
A military source noted that the Fifth Division forces in El Obeid are recovering a large portion of the civilian vehicles looted by the Rapid Support Forces from the Nahud area.
